PORR has secured two contracts from Polish railway infrastructure operator PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe, valued at over €532m ($617.57m).

These contracts focus on the modernisation of railway lines 108 and 104 and aim to enhance transport connections in south-east Poland.

PORR CEO Karl-Heinz Strauss said: “Polish railway construction is among the most dynamic in Europe. We are delighted to be making an important contribution to modernising the railways with our technical know-how – especially now, where we can apply our expertise to improving transport links in the south-east and strengthening the infrastructure near the border.”

The contract for line 108 involves comprehensive modernisation from Jasło to Nowy Zagórz, with the aim of modernising the railway infrastructure in the direction of the Bieszczady Mountains.

PORR will update 18 stations and stops over 80km, as well as construct six new stops, replace 78 sets of points, and rebuild 80 level crossings.

A key feature of the project is the long-anticipated undergrounding of the railway tracks in Krosno’s urban area. PORR will construct a 1,650m tunnel utilising the open construction method, with approximately 330m being excavated through the cut-and-cover technique.

Additionally, the modernisation will include the construction of three railway tunnels and three road viaducts. The construction is expected to take around 44 months, with the first trains anticipated to operate on the new line by the end of 2028.

For line 104, in partnership with Trakcja System, PORR will modernise the Rabka Zaryte to Fornale section, enhancing transport in the Małopolska region. The modernisation will allow train speeds up to 120km/h, with electrification and new platforms at key stops.

The 15km stretch features a total of 66 engineering structures, which include nine railway bridges, four road bridges, five viaducts, and an underpass at the Mszana Dolna station.

To enhance traffic safety, 11 level crossings will be modernised. Additionally, up to 16 existing level crossings will be replaced, potentially with parallel road systems, to facilitate smoother traffic flow along the railway line.

This project is expected to be completed by the third quarter of 2027.

The contract value for the line 104 project is €132m, with PORR’s interest being around 90.5%.

PORR stated that it will leverage its expertise in design, planning, and construction to deliver these projects.
